With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our Father, Lawrence Frederick Sloggett, 66, of Fort Erie, Ontario, after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on Oct 10th, 2024, and while we mourn his loss, we take solace in knowing he is now in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
Born on May 5, 1958, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Lawrence was the beloved son of the late Jack Merrifield Sloggett Sr. and Pauline Jean (Prue) Sloggett. He is survived by his children, Nicole Marie Kuehnel, Annaliese Gabriele Vetere (Frank), and Gina Marie Middagh (Kyle); and cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaylin, Rylee, Valentina, and Rosalie. Larry will forever be remembered by his friend and mother of his children, Katherine (Freeman) Sloggett.
Lawrence is also survived by his siblings, Marjorie, Madeline, Irene, Marilyn, Eric, Christine and Joanne O'Brien (Jim), and predeceased by his brothers Jimmy, Kenny, and Jack. He will be remembered fondly by his nieces, nephews, and his many friends.
Throughout his life, Lawrence worked hard, whether at the Norton and Carborundum plants or as a skilled drywall finisher. His true passions lay in sports. Lawrence excelled as a baseball and ball hockey player, playing on teams with colleagues and friends in Chippawa and Niagara Falls on the Wartime Warriors ball hockey team and the Mac’s Cats baseball team, where he was a valued teammate.
He also had a deep love for playing pool, a game he took seriously and enjoyed for years. He was known as “TopGun” because of his impressive skills on the table. Lawrence was well-known in local pool leagues, particularly as a member of the Drummond Inn pool team. It wasn’t just about the game for Lawrence; it was the joy of sharing these experiences with friends and loved ones that brought him the most happiness.
A loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Lawrence’s passion for the team never wavered. Through every win and loss, he cheered them on with unwavering devotion, never missing a chance to watch his beloved Leafs in action.
Beyond sports, Lawrence had a talent for making others feel seen and valued. His welcoming spirit was one of his defining qualities. Whether you were family, a friend, or a stranger, Lawrence greeted you with a warm smile and an open heart. He had a way of making everyone feel at home. Conversations with him were easy, genuine, and full of laughter, No one ever left his company without feeling a little lighter, a little more loved, and a little more connected. His kindness and hospitality extended far beyond words; he made space for everyone in his life, sharing his time, his stories, and his love freely.
Family was at the center of Lawrence’s life. He cherished the time spent at the family cottage in Port Maitland, on Boxing Days with loved ones, and on fishing trips with his father, family, and friends. These simple moments with his daughters, family, and friends are treasured memories that will be held close forever.
His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and they will forever remember the time spent with their Papa, the lessons he shared, and the laughter that filled their days together. His memory will continue to live on in them, in his children, and in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday, October 18th, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Williams Funeral Home, 722 Ridge Road North, Ridgeway, ON. A funeral service will start at 11:00 AM.
Afterward, the family invites family and friends to a Celebration of Life Luncheon at 1:00 PM at the Crystal Ridge Community Centre, 99 Ridge Road South, Ridgeway.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Scher and the palliative care staff at Douglas Memorial Hospital for all their compassion and support while caring for our father.
Though he will be deeply missed, we find comfort in knowing Lawrence is at peace, reunited with loved ones in Heaven, watching over us with the same warmth and love he shared throughout his life.
