Obituary of Garvin Earl Dell
The family of Garvin Earl Dell announce his passing on Saturday, October 19th, 2024 at the Niagara Falls General Hospital. Garvin was born on May 30th, 1935 to Earl Kenneth Dell and Eva Salome (nee Gorham). Predeceased by his parents and brother Larry and survived by sister Beverley and nieces and nephews. Loving husband of Sharon (nee Huffman), dear father of Katherine, Marianne, and Janice Dell and cherished grandfather of Ylan Garcia Dell.
Gar was a quiet man of many talents. From an early age, he showed a gift for music. He played the snare drum as a boy in the Ridgeway Bugle Band, and later played alto saxophone for the Sy Sherk Band, the Gino Rossi Concert Band and clarinet and saxophone with Mark Fairchild and the Port Colborne Operatic Society. He was a skilled craftsman, creating everything from from toothpick structures at the age of 14 to building his family home where he was still residing 54 years later, making dozens of miniature houses, and beautiful wooden home furnishings with his Woodshop business. As a young man he began apprenticing in the family business of Dell Funeral Home and later managed and ran Dell’s Department Store until retirement in 1989. The business was especially successful in 1969 when he met Sharon who as a teacher was working a summer job in the hardware department. They married in 1970 and came to live in the house he had lovingly helped build on his grandfather Gorham’s farm property on Gorham Road, a special home and location which gave him a great sense of pride and belonging.
Gar was also proud of his three daughters and their accomplishments and his grandson Ylan. He took meticulous care of his property, could fix or build anything, enjoyed watching sports with his grandson and completing countless puzzles while listening to his Big Band music. Garvin was a quiet-natured, gentle and gifted man who lived his best life. We are forever grateful and will miss him dearly. Honouring Garvin’s wishes, cremation will take place with no funeral services plans.
